Sweet new baby girl ~ {Gold Coast Newborn Lifestyle Photographer}

By Norleena Horton | Nov 29, 2016 | 2 Comments
mother holding baby girl in nursery at home {Gold Coast Newborn Lifestyle Photographer}

When you welcome your first baby your heart fills to the brim with so much love for them.  You soak up every sweet moment of their day with you whether they are asleep or awake.  You just hope you will remember the little things.  The way they grasp your hand, their giggles and the way they smile at you, simply because they are with you.  Your love for your child is like no other love. Its a love that aches so deeply, but it is such a beautiful ache.

As the months and perhaps years pass and you think about adding to your family, you naturally start to worry about little things.  Could you possibly love another child as much as you love your first?  Will your first child love their tiny sibling? The answers are Yes and Yes! Love has the wonderful ability to grow exponentially as your family grows, bringing more joy and happiness than you could ever imagine possible even though the days are long and often hard.

This gorgeous family’s joy and happiness of having their eagerly awaited second daughter with them was a beautiful sight to behold and capture.  At 11 days old she was keen to ensure she didn’t miss out on any fun and stayed awake and alert for most of the session.  Her big sister lavished her baby sister with adoring attention and will no doubt be keen for her little sister to be big enough to play with her.  Mum and Dad glowed with pride and their love for their family overflowed in their in home newborn lifestyle session.  Their session was full of all the moments a family can enjoy in their own home.  Tender, quiet moments holding their baby girl, reading books with their eldest daughter and playful fun before the inevitable chaos  in between feeding and sleeping.

It was such a privilege to be invited into this family’s home to capture their precious moments as a new family of four.

Our moments in September {Gold Coast Family Lifestyle Photographer}

Being a mum is one of my greatest joys in life, even though it is demanding and challenges me daily.  I mean who has kids that don’t wind you up regularly, really?  Watching the bond between my sons grow is something I cherish so dearly and capturing some of those moments are very important to me.  They may not always get on but they will have pictures that will show them that there were times that they did!! I rarely ask my children to look at me when I’m photographing them. I want to capture them doing what interests them and their unique expressions, whatever their emotions are.  Lately I have been getting ‘cheeeeese’ which they have learnt at daycare, and I cringe but laugh because it is still so cute!

Baby’s First Birthday ~ Benowa Gardens {Gold Coast Family Photographer}

By Norleena Horton | Nov 22, 2016 | 0 Comments
outdoor-photography-gold-coast-family-lifestyle-photographer-243

Reaching your baby’s first birthday, whether you have one or more is always such a big moment. You’ve watched your baby grow from a helpless newborn and you’re starting to see their personality and character really shine through as each month passes. Life teases you with snippets of what normal feels like, and its still crazy while they’re teething but every day it gets just a little bit easier.

This beautiful family wanted to celebrate their baby boy’s first birthday with an afternoon in the park. Their children hadn’t been to Benowa Gardens before and they enjoyed exploring and having all the attention of their Mum and Dad. Mum especially wanted pictures of her with her babies.  As the main picture taker in her family she wanted to enjoy being on the other side of the camera and loving on her family.  The weather wasn’t on our side unfortunately and a storm came in very quickly, extinguishing the afternoon sunset behind heavy dark clouds. We had enough time to capture some precious moments full of love between them though!!

Our moments in August 2016 {Gold Coast Family Lifestyle Photographer}

By Norleena Horton | Nov 22, 2016 | 0 Comments
boy looking at seagulls {Gold Coast Family Lifestyle Photographer}

I’m a mum to three boys.  My eldest is 5 and my youngest are twins and they have just turned 2 years old.  I’m only beginning to understand what having a busy life means.  August was a juggle between caring for my family and running my lifestyle photography business.  Someone once said to me that life isn’t either/or anymore, it’s as well.  So we fit more and more into what feel like shorter and shorter days.  Time doesn’t slow down for us.  I reflected on what was important for me and realised that there is a limit to how much I can do if I want to be present for my family and the best me I can possibly be, doing the things that I love to do.  Life really is too short, but being too busy to enjoy it isn’t the answer, for me anyway.   My passions in life are my family and my photography business. They force me to look for happiness and joy in little things.  The gestures and moments that could otherwise go un-noticed, missed in the blink of an eye.  Everyday happenings barely long enough to become a memory and so quickly forgotten.  I won’t photograph all of them but these little pieces make up our life and we won’t remember a lot of them, but we will at least have something with these pictures to take us back to them.

Thanks for stopping by!

Beach Play ~ life is a tangle {Gold Coast Family Photographer}

By Norleena Horton | Oct 4, 2016 | 0 Comments
family snuggling and playing on beach {Gold Coast Family Lifestyle Photographer}

Gold Coast weather played havoc with beach photography sessions throughout July.  We had to reschedule this session from a previous week but the day was perfect when we did get together at the Gold Coast Spit. I love photographing this beautiful family.  I have had the pleasure of watching their gorgeous children grow over the past year since Mr J was a tiny newborn baby only 3 weeks old.

A year later Mr J is a charming little guy, who loves to snuggle and enjoys all the attention he receives from his adoring family.  He has a job keeping up with his adventurous sisters though.  They had me running all over the beach after them and it was such a pleasure getting to know them a little more as they’ve grown into such beautiful free spirits.

There is always the element of the unknown when it comes to shooting family sessions especially with very young children.  Each child expresses themselves so differently. I love capturing their unique expressions and mannerisms as they explore their environment and simply enjoy being with each other.

When you have a family life becomes extra busy, and as your family grows, the days fill up and sometimes life feels like a tangled mess, and it is, a beautiful tangled mess!  The feeling of having your children snuggled in close, wriggling and giggling would have to be one of the best feelings in the world to me.  Their happiness in feeling close to their parents and enjoying 100% of their attention is such always such an amazing picture to give to families from a family lifestyle session.

Our moments in July 2016

By Norleena Horton | Sep 20, 2016 | 0 Comments
lifestyle-photography-gold-coast-family-photographer-178

There have been a lot of times in my life when ‘what if?’ was used to explain why I shouldn’t do something.  What if I failed, what if something bad happened, what if I got hurt, what if I was rejected?  There have been times in my life when these questions have protected me from harm, that is for certain, but there is a point when these questions are simply the voice of fear.  I have learnt to recognise my voice of fear and as soon as I hear it I know that regardless of whether I succeed or fail, the doing is what is important.

I’ve always been certain that the artistic gene missed me completely because anything artistic like drawing or painting was such hard work for me.  It was obvious I have no natural talent in that area.  My brother on the other hand has it in spades.  So there began the problem, I would compare myself to my brother and see how much natural talent he seemed to have and how much I seemed to lack.  So I didn’t try.

Perhaps as I get older and time seems to pass so quickly I have less patience for fear holding me back.  Now the question of ‘what if?” is positive and motivates me to try something I would never have expected I would do, because why not?  What have I got to lose?  If I fail, I find what I need to improve for next time.  Every imperfect result is a step towards what I want to achieve and when that achievement does come, everything I have learned along the path I have taken to reach it is what I value the most, because it is the doing that is most important.

My journey with photography has opened up a great big box of fears but I am determined to prove each one wrong.  When I look back on my personal pictures from this month I can tell you I took a lot of pictures that I know were technically pretty bad and it was deliberate.  I needed to study them to learn what not to do and also to let go of the idea of ‘perfection’.  I wanted to get back to shooting more intuitively with what I have learnt, and give myself the space to be creative without being too rigid in my expectations.  I wanted to enjoy doing it for me, just for me and for what I want my children to have of themselves.  I want to look back and say every success and failure was worth the effort.

In July I said ‘yes’ to doing things creatively that I would never have expected to do.  A personal project to submit for publication in The Courage Issue of  ‘The Long Way Home’ was born.  I had two goes at shooting for this project.  The first time bombed because my son and I just weren’t feeling it.  The second time we approached it as a collaboration of ideas and we had so much fun doing it together, mostly because I lightened up!  The entire set of images from that day are wonderful memories of how much we enjoyed creating together, and they are some of my favourite images of my son to date.  It was a project that never would have happened if I had told myself I would never be published. I was overjoyed to receive the email that my submission had been accepted but I wouldn’t have been disappointed if it hadn’t been accepted because the results were my reward for the effort.  It was doing the work that was most important.

Why I need a Lifestyle Photographer {Gold Coast Newborn, Baby and Family Photography}

By Norleena Horton | Aug 4, 2016 | 0 Comments
Mother cuddling baby boy after nap {Gold Coast Newborn, Baby and Family Lifestyle Photographer}

I’m a Gold Coast Family Lifestyle Photographer and I’m passionate about capturing authentic moments of love and connection for growing families like mine.  The more I do it for other families, the more I realise I need a Lifestyle Photographer to help me capture my own family’s connection, joy and expression.

I take a lot of pictures of my sons. I love the idea that they will be able to look back at their childhood and not only know something about their childhood before their first memories, but that they might also feel the wonder of the moments I captured of them.  In years to come I hope that they will be able to see how in awe of the world they were when they were children.  How they found wonder in the smallest of things and that they’ll feel how much their connection and love for each other and our family grew each day.

After I had my boys, photography became a way for me to preserve our moments because I knew there would be so much about their littleness that I would forget as time went on.  I want more for them in our pictures though. There are things I simply can’t capture as easily myself.  The moments that involve all of us together are really difficult to capture candidly.  The times we’re all playing together or lounging about on the bed.  The crazy moments when they’re bouncing all around and over us. The quiet moments when they’re feeling really snuggly and just want to sit with us and read a book.  The after nap snuggles and the way our son’s do the special affectionate things they do.  The calm after the falling tension of the storm.   I want our pictures to speak so loudly of what the love in our family feels like that our boys will never, for a second, doubt how much they are loved and cherished!

Our home is where our heart is.

Our days are filled with chaos, noise and mess and a tangle of arms and legs as we love on each other, growing together as a family with all its ups and downs, in our home. We yell and play, cuddle and laugh at our silliness together. These are the moments I want our family to have memories of.  I don’t really need the memory of the mess because I will never forget that!! I do really want the moments that are filled with our love and happiness of being a family. I often think about which picture I would value more when I’m really old and feeling nostalgic. Would it be the picture perfect pose or the moments captured in our home where our real family connection grows everyday? Our life isn’t picture perfect so it won’t be that one! A Lifestyle Photographer would come to our home, we wouldn’t have to worry about whether our children’s behaviour will be on point because we are all comfortable in our own home.  If we chose an outdoor location, we would be happy to play and enjoying our surroundings, while our lifestyle photographer  was attentive to capturing our memories.

I want all of us to be in the picture!

As the main picture taker I am often missing from the picture and I want to have pictures of all of us together. When I do try to get in the picture it has its limitations. I’ve done it all, iPhone selfies (which I am embarrassingly bad at), self timers and remote shutter controls (which my boys are now fascinated with), I just want to be free of that for a few hours! Whether I do it myself or ask my husband to take the picture, I am not fully in the moment. I’m consciously thinking about how I look, exposure, composition, position and always just hoping we catch a moment we can cherish. I don’t want to have the worry of setting up the shot and then trying to get it.

Take this day for example. I had to decide on my camera settings, get the tripod set up and positioned and set the exposure and focus. Without the boys in the room I took a few test shots to make sure I had it all ready. Then I brought in the boys, hoping I would get them all in position so that we ‘might’ end up with something decent. As soon as they see the remote they each want a turn with it so I decide to go with it and this is what we have. I LOVE it, but it was the shot before my eldest decided that it was time to point his behind at the camera. In the space of 15 minutes the boys took 27 pictures for this one and the window of opportunity had passed. As much as I love this picture, I had to contain my boys to get it and I’d love something more carefree and spontaneous.

I’d love to have a Lifestyle Photographer there to connect with us to keep the session flowing, work the angles around us, capturing us naturally while creatively using natural light.
My husband has the most beautiful smile but he freezes up when he’s in front of a camera, it just naturally takes a while for him to relax. I just know that beautiful smile and the sweetness I see from him with me and our boys would really shine through if we could relax and enjoy our lifestyle photography session in front of the camera but oblivious to it.

I want to see my family up on our walls!

Together our family is creating a life out of our moments and memories. We are the art in our daily life and capturing our family so that our pictures are a true reflection of who we are is so important to me. I don’t want just pictures of us. I want pictures of my family that truly reflect our personalities and our connection with each other. When my son’s look at my pictures of us on our walls they recognise themselves and their emotions because they lived the moment. They can feel what it was like again because they can see it, it’s not hidden on my phone or on my computer. If they don’t remember the moment, they’ll always have a reminder of it in print.  I hope that they’ll feel the wonder of their childhood moments and that they’ll weave all that wonder into the fabric of their life.

I would choose a Lifestyle Photographer who understands how to capture our everyday moments in the most beautiful way. One who is confident creating meaningful images in any type of natural light. Someone who connects with us as a family and understands which moments are important to us to have captured, and helps us create those moments together during our time with them.

Our moments in June 2016

By Norleena Horton | Aug 2, 2016 | 0 Comments
Mum with young sons at home {Gold Coast Family Lifestyle Photographer}

I always find writing is such a long process for me which is why my personal blog posts always take me sooo long to put into words, and why I’m posting my selection of June moments in August!  June was a much better month for us after the beating we were given in May with our teething toddlers.  Both boys had made it through the worst and were a lot happier and more playful especially with each other.

I looked back on my pictures from June and while I have the more structured images shared elsewhere, its the completely candid blooper shots that have made me giggle, and the ones I have chosen to share in this post.  I can’t pose my boys.  The twins don’t follow instructions and they definitely won’t stand still in pretty light unless I get really lucky.  My eldest is marginally more co-operative.  So I am pretty much shooting by the seat of my pants with them and always looking for a moment that brings it all together.  The in between moments are the ones I truly love though.

I gave my husband my big camera to try and get a picture of me with the boys and its a cracker.  Talk about capturing a moment, I think he nailed it though!!  Dad then went away for a week to Nashville which we all managed to cope with, but we were so, so glad to have him home.  I knew I wanted to get a shot of the boys greeting him at the front door and I was all on track with getting the boys fed and dressed.  All I needed to do was remove the bazillion pairs of shoes we seem to have at the front door and get my camera settings ready.  Well Dad pulled into the driveway before I could get my camera settings ready so I was shooting and adjusting during the fast flurry of excitement at the door and squeals of ‘Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!’ and hoping to heaven my shots weren’t under or overexposed.  It was all over within seconds it seemed, a quick check and I sighed a sigh of relief, I got them!

Thanks for stopping by, I hope some of these make you smile!

Baby N – Charming little man 4 weeks old {Gold Coast Fresh 48 Newborn Photographer)

By Norleena Horton | Jul 14, 2016 | 0 Comments
Mum kissing newborn baby boy at home {Gold Coast newborn Lifestyle Photographer}

Little baby N was welcomed by his adoring Mum and Dad at the end of May.  His first few weeks as a newborn held some uncertain moments with some time spent in Special Care and ICU.  It all ended well when he came home cleared of any ongoing concerns and at 4 weeks old he looked an absolute picture of delight.  Mum and Dad are completely smitten with him and he lavishes them with an endless amount of cuteness and charming personality.  He is the full and loudly beating heart of this little family.

I enjoyed getting to know Kiara and Steve since their in home maternity session as they eagerly awaited the arrival of their precious baby boy.  It was such a privilege to see their incredible joy and happiness as they held him after he was born, the strength of their love and their fierce protectiveness of their son during his stay in hospital, and to capture those important first memories for them in his Fresh 48 session.  His newborn lifestyle session at 4 weeks old, was such a lot of fun.  Baby N made sure he didn’t miss too much of the action as he soaked up all the attention!  It all caught up with him and we saw some sweet sleepy snuggles with Mum before he was ready to play again.

Congratulations Kiara and Steve, Baby N is one amazing little man and your family is gorgeous!

Our moments in May 2016

By Norleena Horton | Jun 21, 2016 | 0 Comments
{Gold Coast Family Lifestyle Photographer}-1831

May…  It was a month of slow happenings and long days that felt like walking through mud in concrete boots.  Our twins were in the worst of their teething, 4 molars and 4 eye teeth for each little boy, were pushing their way out and making my babies miserable.  Pain cries during the night, sharing our bed with 1 or 2 of the boys almost every night, turned us into walking zombie parents.  I don’t think our conversations even made sense if we had any!  If there was 30 seconds of silence between the cries of distress during the day it was unexpected bliss, or otherwise meant trouble!  Carrying two howling 18 month old 12kg boys at the same time is do-able but not all day, and so we often found ourselves in a pile up, on me, on the floor, riding out the storm, hoping another kiss or a squeezy cuddle will calm them, eventually.  Every day I wiped their tears and runny noses for seemingly the hundredth time, I soothed their cries, hugged my three boys as much and as often as they needed it, and deep in the chaos and cacophony, I found my quiet.   I forgot the world outside, lost in the centre of my universe, completely present and doing what fills my heart to overflowing.

While teething and disruption set the theme for the month, we certainly weren’t short of happy moments.  Here are a few from our month in May.  Thanks for stopping in to take a look!
